NÔS TOCATINA

The Tocatinas have been with me practically since I first discovered Cape Verde in 1980.
It’s been four decades of being lulled by the sounds of Tober, Djonsa, Jorge Figueiredo, and later also Jorge Lima, Totó Silva, Janito, Zay Di Djon Pitata, and so many other musicians.

They are the stars and alchemists of endless gatherings, magical nights lived in celebration—whether in their homes in the city of Praia or around the island of Santiago, in Tarrafal, at seaside feasts… Forti sabi!

This is all about sharing—where music is played and sung spontaneously, conversations flow, and eyes close to listen and savor those unique, delightful moments that have always been part of this passionate experience I have with the islands and the friends I have there.

Then this year, a Tocatina was announced for Plateau.

On June 27, 2024, I was supposed to return to Portugal from Cape Verde on a flight that ended up being delayed by 12 hours. And so, I was able to attend and film the tocatina with my friends.

The repertoire was long and varied. To avoid missing the flight, I couldn’t record the last two songs; I had to pack everything in a rush and head to the airport. That’s how it is when you’re at home.

I already feel like going back tomorrow.

A production by Insulada. Thank you to everyone, and also to Paulo Lobo Linhares.
